HALF OF FORESTS CUT DOWN IN SERBIA IN FIVE YEARS

The number of agricultural farms decreased by 10% in the last five years, and the total available agricultural area by a fifth. What is an even bigger problem, the area under forests has decreased by 48%, according to the first data from the 2023 Census of Agriculture.

Based on research RA as of 2020, private forests occupied 1.2 million hectares. In total, under private and state ownership, there were 2.2 million hectares. When looking at the data of the last census from 2023, that number is 504,104 hectares, which means that half has practically disappeared.

Of the total available agricultural land, 80% is used. The largest areas of arable land and gardens are represented in the Region of Vojvodina (55.8%), while orchards are most represented in the Region of Ĺ umadija and Western Serbia (54.9%).
