Half of IT decision makers still think laser printers are more sustainable than inkjet printers

Epson strives to address these misconceptions to help organizations reduce costs and strengthen sustainability

New data shows that there is a common and potentially costly misconception among IT decision-makers about which printing technology is more sustainable: Laser or inkjet.

According to a survey conducted by analyst firm Quocirca, 47% of respondents from the UK, US, France and Germany believe that laser printers are a more sustainable choice in terms of energy efficiency, environmental impact, consumables and total cost of ownership.(1)

Employees at larger companies with more than 1,000 employees held this misconception more often than their counterparts at smaller companies. A staggering 57% of respondents believed laser technology was more sustainable, while 21% said inkjet technology was more sustainable.

Karl Angove, Epson Europe, said: “At a time when electricity costs are high, energy consumption is rising and global warming is a major challenge, misconceptions about printing technology can cost organizations dearly. And that from the point of view of energy bills and from the point of view of increased CO2 emissions.”

“As more and more respondents in larger companies mistakenly believe that laser printers are more sustainable than inkjet printers, they can waste significant amounts of energy and money and unnecessarily increase emissions. These organizations may have hundreds of printers. Such a misconception and poor choice of printing technology could have a real impact.”

Epson’s Heat-Free inkjet printers use no heat, so they use less electricity, reducing running costs and CO2 emissions. Inkjet printers with Heat-Free technology do not heat up when turned on or wake from sleep mode, so they can print the first page faster and increase user productivity.(2)

Heat-Free inkjet printers typically have fewer consumables than laser printers. This reduces the number of necessary interventions and shortens downtime.(3)

Epson has previously announced that it will end the worldwide sale and distribution of laser printers by 2025. She justified this decision by the limited ability of this technology to make significant progress in the field of sustainability.

Angove continues: “Epson’s decision to leave the laser printer market was inevitable. Our company is committed to sustainable innovation and practices, but laser printers do not fit into that framework. They usually use more energy than inkjet printers and have more consumable parts. This is simply a consequence of how this technology works – it heats up and fixes the toner to the page. This technology is therefore limited in how far it can be improved.”

“Instead, our printing business will be 100% dedicated to piezoelectric inkjet printing with Heat-Free technology, using our own technologies to provide efficient and sustainable printing solutions for our partners and end users.”
