BarcelonaA report that the Ministry of Justice has published this Thursday reveals that 53.6% of the 862 drivers killed in 2023 in traffic accidents in Spain who were subjected to toxicological analysis tested positive for alcohol, drugs or psychoactive drugs. It is a figure very similar to that of 2022, an increase of 0.8%. By category, alcohol remains the most detected substance: 32.7% of fatalities tested positive for it, although this percentage is 2.8% less than in 2022.
On the other hand, positives for drugs (2.3%) and psychoactive drugs (1.1%) increased. Among the substances, cocaine and cannabis predominate, appearing in 22.7% of cases. Psychotropic drugs, on the other hand, are detected in 15.7% of the dead. In the case of those positive for alcohol, the majority (almost 70%) had a very high blood alcohol level, equal to or greater than 1.2 g/L and therefore with very serious degrees of intoxication.
The same report points out that the trend continues that the majority of dead drivers with positive toxicological results were men (90%). By age, the range in which more drivers tested positive is again from 25 to 54 years old, with 58.5%. This means a decrease compared to 2022, when they were 63.6%. For those aged 18 to 34, fatal crashes involving drivers with positive toxicological results are concentrated on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, while the distribution between weekdays and holidays is equal for drivers aged 45 to 54.
