Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar has died, Israel has confirmed

Yahya Sinwar, the main leader of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, was killed in an attack by the Israeli army. The Israeli government confirmed Sinwar’s death on Thursday night after a DNA test on the body. However, there has been no response from Hamas yet.

Israeli forces launched an operation targeting a group of Hamas fighters in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Wednesday, the Israeli military said. There, Sinwar lost his life in a gunfight with other fighters. However, the Israeli forces did not know in advance that Sinwar was there. After the army went there, they found the dead bodies of three people, including a warrior who looked like Sinwar. The matter can be confirmed after the DNA test of the dead body on Thursday.

He has been on the run since the deadly attack by Hamas in Israel on October 7 last year. Since then, Sinwar has been Israel’s main target. This information came out in a report of the Israeli media Times of Israel.

Sinwar has been hiding in Gaza for the past year. He foiled several Israeli assassination attempts. He is considered to be the main mastermind behind the attacks by Hamas in Israel. He was announced as the organization’s new leader in August after the assassination of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli strike in Tehran.

Experts on the Islamist movement say Hamas’ ideology sees Israel not just as a political rival, but as an occupying power in Muslim lands. For this reason, Sinwar and his followers consider war and suffering as part of the greater sacrifice of Islam. Memories of his miserable childhood in Gaza often came up in his speech. There he grew up in a poor family. Wissam Ibrahim, a resident of Gaza, said Sinwar once said that his mother used to make clothes for him out of empty UN food aid sacks.

After Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, Sinwar focused Hamas’s morale and resources on building a massive military infrastructure inside Gaza.
