Ubisoft took a big gamble by developing its Star Wars in an open world. And for good reason, it is the first game in the license to offer players a gigantic map to explore as they please, well almost. Because since its release, opinions have diverged on Star Wars Outlawswhether from the players’ side or from the press. While some are talking about an ultra-immersive game, or even “the Star Wars game of a generation”, others, on the contrary, point the finger at an exploration that is too locked down, a story that is too conventional, a deplorable AI, technical problems, failed animations (especially facial) or even more broadly a game “disneyfied». It is true that to reward players in their exploration, Ubisoft has made many references to the saga bought by the firm with the big ears. And although it offers a new adventure with main and secondary characters invented for the occasion, the game is anchored in the timeline of the saga since it is located between The Empire Strikes Back et Return of the Jedi. It then involves the player by making him travel to planets such as Tatooine or Kijimi. The adventure is cheerfully punctuated with easter eggs to the films and series stamped Star Wars. The proof in seven points.
#7 KRAYT DRAGONS
Choosing to send the player to Tatooine necessarily meant for Massive Entertainment to include many elements from the films, the desert planet being one of the most represented in the license. Among the hostile creatures that populate Tatooine, nothing or almost nothing is more dangerous than the Krayt Dragon, an immense creature that lives and moves under the dunes. It is during an episode of season 2 of The Mandalorian that the bounty hunter and the Sand People must eliminate one of them. In Ubisoft’s game, heroine Kay Vess encounters it during a mission for the Jawas.
#6 ANAKIN SKYWALKER DOESN’T LIKE SAND
Attention all serious fans. Still on Tatooine, Kay can visit the Mos Eisley spaceport, depicted in A New Hope, when Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi meet Han Solo there. Listening to a Stormtrooper string together his few lines of dialogue, she can hear “I don’t understand why some people hate this place. I love the sand!” A phrase clearly identified as a response to Anakin’s famous quote in Attack of the Cloneswhen still saddened by the death of his mother, he said “I don’t like sand, it’s coarse, aggressive, irritating and gets everywhere.”
#5 R2-D2 ET C-3PO
The two most famous droids in the galaxy also have their place. In the caches that the player must find and lockpick, there is a variant of the astromech droid and the protocol droid. Presented as dusty old relics, the two characters serve as a little wink.
#4 ARCADE GAMES
Throughout the galaxy, Kay can play arcade machines and games that are very much inspired by those of the 70s. Arcade games were extremely popular at the time of the release of Star Wars in 1977, and Massive Entertainment clearly took inspiration from many games from those years to pay homage to them.
#3 LARS FARM
Nostalgia alert. While traveling around Tatooine, players can stumble upon the house where Luke grew up alongside his uncle Owen Lars and aunt Beru, and inside, discover a note probably written by Owen, recounting his nephew’s childhood. It is recalled that at the time, the forces of the Empire eliminated the Jedi’s surrogate parents and partially burned their house.
#2 JABBA LE HUTT, BOBA FAT, HE SOLO ET LANDO CALRISSIAN
The famous Hutt found himself at the heart of a controversy surrounding the game before its release. That ofa mission exclusively for Xbox Series owners and a season pass. After the controversy extinguished by Ubisoft, we see that the big slug is indeed present in the game, in its famous palace, and we will be able to work for it (and thus get closer to the Hutt cartel). While walking through Jabba’s palace, Kay can see famous bounty hunter Boba Fett behind a train gate to chat with an NPC. While it is impossible to approach him, this short cameo helps to give credibility to Jabba’s lair and make it more alive in the eyes of fans of the films. With this in mind, Massive Entertainment hasn’t forgotten Han Solo, or rather his ice coffinwhich sits proudly in the main room. Finally, the studio has also integrated Lando Calrissian into the title. In the game, he is the one who teaches Kay Vess how to cheat during the wild games of Sabacc.
#1 GREEDO VS HIM SOLO
Outlaws teems with little hidden details. In the Mos Eisley cantina, Traces of the blaster fight between Han Solo and Greedo can be found In A New Hopeduring which the latter lost his life. Indeed, a burn mark produced by a firearm and visible on a wall, above a bench. Better, approaching it activates a line of dialogue from an NPC, warning not to sit there, because a “curse” hovers over the place.
