New transfer of power
Three days after the government’s announcement, new ministers continue to take up residence. This Thursday the transfer of power ceremony between Guillaume Kasbarian and Laurent Marcangeli is expected. The president of the Horizons group in the National Assembly has been appointed Minister of Public Action, Civil Service and Simplification. Its mission will notably be to calm relations with public sector agents and reopen social dialogue. “Mr. Marcangeli must take stock of the challenges we face,” demands Mylène Jacquot, leader of the CFDT-Public Service, in The World.
Asia remembers the devastating tsunami
Moving ceremonies have kicked off in several Asian countries to mark the 20th anniversary of the deadliest tsunami in history, which killed more than 220,000 people on Boxing Day. On December 26, 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra caused huge waves that swept across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries in the Indian Ocean, with victims as far away as Somalia. In the Indonesian province of Aceh, where around 100,000 people were killed, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque kicked off a series of commemorations across Asia with a three-minute siren on the hour exact details of the disaster, followed by prayers.
The return of “Squid Game” on Netflix
Was there a need for a second season for the colossally successful South Korean series on Netflix? Squid Game returns after three years of scarcity with a first episode that whets the appetite for what comes next. The “Squid Game” is a deadly game in which competitors are forced to participate in creative and sadistic trials with a deadly outcome. The last person alive gets 4.6 billion won; basically, 34 million euros. The series will be renewed for a final and third season in 2025.
