The orchestra nurtures the folk melody

The first National Orchestra in the diaspora was established in Vienna, under the direction of the famous accordionist Nikola Zarić. The orchestra, which begins a new era of highly musical artistic cult in the diaspora, has 15 excellent artists who, under the professional leadership of Nikola Zarić, faithfully and meticulously preserve, nurture and develop Serbian folk melos, including various traditional sounds from other areas of the former Yugoslavia.

Their wide oeuvre includes their own compositions in the spirit of Serbian traditional music, various dances, suites, carols and even songs from all areas in vocal and instrumental performance. A special note in their interpretations is made by the artistic director Nikola Zarić, an artist on the harmonica, who consciously combines certain characteristics and elements of classical – chamber music with Serbian melos. On Nikola’s initiative, the Viennese National Orchestra was founded last year and in December gave the Viennese audience an extraordinary concert premiere as the official start of the orchestra’s creativity. Already in April of this year, the second festive concert of the Vienna Folk Orchestra was successfully organized in Vienna’s Laurel Hall.

At this year’s Svetosava Academy in Vienna, the orchestra completed the entire program. Since its foundation, the orchestra has delighted the Viennese audience, which until now had no opportunity to listen to its own, diaspora folk orchestra, but could only enjoy the performance of music by folk orchestras from the motherland.

The wealth of the former South

Zarić strives with this orchestral community to build a serious and established status in the entire diaspora and also to establish a new cooperation with the international organizations of our homeland. The Vienna National Orchestra is grateful for the sincere help of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Viennese Prosvjeta, and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian embassy, and hopes that the audience in the entire diaspora will recognize the spirit of this project, which will survive and live on in all future generations.

SECURE LEADERSHIP: Nikola Zarić

– This is a unique project with which we want to gather our excellent musicians in order to nurture our music. We want to present our music to the Austrian and other audiences, in order to see how rich is the creativity of Serbian artists from the area of the former Yugoslavia – explained Zarić. He pointed out that a large number of our excellent musical artists live and create in Vienna, so the orchestra has a very high quality.
