Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” at the Diachrono Theater Mary Vidali

“Betrayal” by the Nobel laureate Harold Pinter, one of the most important works of the great British dramatist, comes to Diachrono Theater, directed by Byron Kolasis from Monday, November 4at 21:00 and every Monday and Tuesday at the same time, until January 7.

Three actors, the multi-experienced Byron Kolasis who also signs the direction in the role of the enigmatic husband Robert, Kostas Bigalis in the role of the passionate, but at the same time insecure and guilty lover Jerry, and Emmy Dimitrakopoulou in the complex and complicated psyche role of the wife Emma.
An apparently classic Ibsenic triangle, but through an unexpected depth and dimensional approach to the three characters from the exciting pen of the award-winning British author, is revealed to be subversively complex, confirming the unfathomable human nature in all its spectrum.

Project Summary:

The story, through nine scenes, evolves over a decade, which, however, ingeniously starts from the end to the beginning, following in reverse chronological order not only the stormy beginning of Emma and Jerry’s illicit relationship, but also the entire path of the deterioration of relationships of all three characters.
Secrets, lies, and intrigue star in this transcendent love triangle that everyone could relate to… as Pinter does not hesitate to imply by giving a broader meaning to the word “betrayal” and intriguing the viewer to reflect on the everyone’s right, if they feel like it, to go beyond the binding limits of a social convention, which these three characters with difficulty, but finally surrendering to their passion, chose not to follow… “You can’t blame the law of gravity that the world falls into the nets of love” as Einstein said.

Director’s note:

When I first read the text of the play I knew it would take time to fully understand the highly complex psyche of the three characters.
And the high degree of difficulty had to do with the narrative “strangeness” of the story, that is, the time reversal of the events of a decade from the end to the beginning…

An intelligent step back in time, which I had to decode in such a way that the viewer understood everything in the end…whatever it means…end…certainly for the unexpectedly subversive way of writing of the enigmatic Pinter…
An additional difficulty of the performance was for me to combine the dual status of director and actor, so that one would not work at the expense of the other, which I knew would not be easy at all…

But as I explored the play by reading the text again and again, I felt the charming challenge of the masterfully hidden back meanings in each of the masterful nine scenes and decided with a recklessly enthusiastic ignorance of danger to succumb to the allure of the challenge of the charismatic British author!
