“Has it ever been worse”? APAV warns of “rise” in cases, opposition criticizes Montenegro’s “perceptions” policy

Luís Montenegro stated, on Monday, that the problem of domestic violence in Portugal “has already been worse” and that the increase in cases is the effect of the increase in reports.

“I don’t want to shock anyone, but I am aware that the increase we have seen in recent years does not mean a real increase, it means an increase in knowledge”, these.

In statements to Renaissance, Daniel Cotrimfrom the Portuguese Victim Support Association (APAV), contradicts Montenegro’s thesis. Data that is public “represents what people show, what people let us know.”

The APAV technician estimates that, despite the increased awareness of the topic, the number of cases is “much higher” than known.

“Portugal was much worse in terms of domestic violence. We were much worse in the sense that we didn’t know the reality. Therefore, at this moment, we have another vision of reality, and it is a vision that does not see domestic violence numbers stagnating, or a decrease, but an increase. That’s what we’ve been seeing,” he says.

Between 2019 and 2023, according to data compiled by Renaissancethe number of reports of domestic violence in Portugal was around 30 thousand per year.
