Has the search bar in the Play Store also disappeared for you? Here’s how it works

The nice and handy search bar at the top of your screen in the Play Store is (mostly) gone. Instead, Google is opting for a completely different approach, but how does that work?

Play Store search bar is no more (or is it?)

For years, searching in the Play Store was the same. You typed in what you were looking for via the search bar at the top. The design of the app store is regularly adjusted and one adjustment is bigger than the other. If you are now looking for an app or game, you can no longer search directly as you are used to.

Instead, Google has introduced a completely new tab, which you can also see at the bottom of the Play Store. There are now four tabs: games, apps, search and books. For films, you have not been able to go to the app store for years, because that was possible for a long time via the Google TV app. That is no longer possible now, but you have to knock on YouTube.

When you open the search tab, the familiar bar appears at the top again, but you can also choose a subcategory to find the right game or app. For example, you can choose from all kinds of categories for apps, such as productivity, photography, entertainment or special applications for your Wear OS watch. Looking for a game? Then you can think of categories such as strategy, racing, puzzle, action or word games.

Unclear: at Books it works slightly differently

You can’t get to all your digital books via the search tab: you have to use the last tab for that. If you open that, you will see the handy search bar at the top again.

All in all, it seems that Google doesn’t quite know what it wants yet, because now it’s secretly a bit of a jumble of possibilities. The update with the new design is rolling out in phases. That means that it may take a while before it reaches your phone.
