Manhole covers with “Novgorodka” appeared in the historical center of the city.

The first such manhole covers appeared on Pobeda-Sofia Square. About this on social networks reports the Center for Urban Environment Development of the Novgorod Region. It is noted that Novgorod coins were distinguished by a characteristic drop-shaped shape and an uneven edge. They had inscriptions in Cyrillic and depicted characteristic scenes.

Similar manhole covers with “Novgorodki” appeared in the historical center of the city. Nine have already been installed in the main square. In total, 20 of these lids were made. The design was developed by specialists together with residents of Veliky Novgorod and experts.

Novgorod coins had a peculiarity – they had a drop-shaped shape and an uneven edge. And all this was connected with technical aspects of production. These were wire coins – scales. They were minted from the mid-14th century until 1717.

The production technology was imperfect, and the metal from which the coins were made was not of very good quality. Therefore, the coin stamps used in the manufacture of flakes quickly wore out. The obverse and reverse images were first cut out on queen cells made of the best metal. Then they made impressions on coin stamps.

The image turned out to be negative, all the convex elements of the picture were pressed in the opposite direction. The circle came out uneven. And there were two protrusions left on the coins after being separated from the wire.
