The year 2024 has just ended and given way to 2025. A year full of promise with a very busy schedule for movie buffs. Like every year, the master of Japanese animation Hayao Miyazaki designed an adorable greeting card on behalf of Studio Ghibli.
Hayao Miyazaki wishes you a happy new year 2025
An essential figure in Japanese animated cinema, Studio Ghibli returned to business in 2023 with the release of the film The Boy and the Heron by Hayao Miyazaki, who won an Oscar for best animated film last spring. Acquired by NipponTV, the studio led by Toshio Suzuki has caused a lot of discussion in 2024, particularly following the opening of a section devoted to Kiki the little witch in the studio’s theme park opened in Nagakute in Aichi Prefecture. The release of the documentary film Hayao Miyazaki and the Heronproduced by NHK, also allowed us to experience the production of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest masterpiece from the inside and discover several secrets about the master.
For now, Studio Ghibli has a rather vague future; if the takeover of the company by one of the largest Japanese groups ensures it a certain financial sustainability, Ghibli must resolve a question that the studio’s management has been working on since the mid-1990s: who will ensure Hayao Miyazaki’s legacy? While the director of Princess Mononoke a you Spirited Away is working on a new project which should recall the epic force of his first works, according to the confidences of his son Gorō Miyazaki, the legendary master of animation has not yet found an heir capable of replacing him when he takes over truly his retirement.
Anyway, like every January 1st, Hayao Miyazaki drew an adorable drawing accompanying the studio’s greeting card. We can see an eight-headed snake there, celebrating the Year of the Wood Snake in Chinese astrology.
Hayao Miyazaki’s drawing is therefore accompanied by a word from Toshio Suzuki, co-founder and director of Studio Ghibli.
Last year began with a series of natural disasters and accidents that left us all in deep disarray. We hope that those affected by the disaster can return to their daily lives as soon as possible, and we sincerely pray that people in other areas will have a calm and uneventful New Year’s Day this year.
To tell you a little about Studio Ghibli, we have almost completed the worldwide release of the film The Boy and the Heron, which was not only seen by a large number of spectators, but which also received numerous awards. More traveling exhibitions and new projects are in the works, so I hope you have high expectations from us. The second phase of Ghibli Park has been successfully opened and the five originally planned areas are now complete. This year, we are determined to continue improving our facilities and operations.
In 2025, Studio Ghibli will begin work on Monday, January 6. Director Hayao Miyazaki’s 84th birthday is being celebrated the day before, but it seems certain that studio staff will (or have already celebrated) him on that day.
We wish Studio Ghibli and Studio Ghibli films the best in the new year.
