HBO Max to Improve Subtitles with Google AI

The subtitles on HBO Max can sometimes leave something to be desired, but hopefully Google’s AI will change that.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the company behind HBO Max, initially wants to use the technology for unscripted television, but with a bit of luck, Google’s AI could also improve translations of scripted television into Dutch in the future.

By using this technology, fewer people will be hired to write subtitles, according to CNBC place Warner Bros. Discovery and Google do say that translators are still needed to check the AI texts.

Warner Bros. Discovery also says that the technology will make subtitling a lot faster and less expensive. Specifically, it will save 50% on costs and it will take 80% less time to create subtitles.
