On the 25th, HDC Hyundai Industrial Development actively explained the suspicions surrounding Chairman Chung Mong-gyu’s ‘privatization of the Korea Football Association (KFA).’
People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin raised suspicions during a question-and-answer session with the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee the previous day regarding the Korea Football Association, claiming that HDC employees had been consistently involved in the construction process of the Korea Football Association Complex.
HDC Hyundai Industrial Development emphasized, “We only helped with procedures such as recruiting world-class domestic and international designers, including UN Studio, for the initial successful design competition for the construction of the Korea Football Center, and receiving letters of intent to participate.” They added, “This was done as part of our social contribution through sports, and we did not charge the Korea Football Association any costs, including labor costs, and we were not involved in any way in the process of selecting the designer or signing the contract.”
He also explained, “In the case of clients who do not have expertise in construction projects, a separate construction management (CM) company is needed to ensure smooth progress of the project and to provide management consulting for the construction. HDC Hyundai Industrial Development is performing this role by dispatching specialized personnel through a management consulting contract to ensure that the Korea Football Association can proceed with the construction while maintaining the set budget and schedule.”
In doing so, they explained, “This is not a direct involvement in the construction, but rather a construction management consulting role, and HDC Hyundai Industrial Development is supporting the Korea Football Association with only the minimum costs and labor costs incurred due to this work without any profit.”
In addition, he added, “The construction company for the construction of the Korea Football Center is Dongbu Construction, and the construction site manager is also an employee from Dongbu Construction who is not related to HDC.”
In the current affairs inquiry held the previous day, Chairman Chung also denied the suspicion, saying, “I have given instructions to help the football association as much as possible since I have specialized knowledge in design, but Hyundai Development Company has not benefited at all from this.”
