The HDMI Forum, the open industry consortium that oversees HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), has officially announced version 2.2 of the specification, which mainly brings a significant leap in the available image quality. With the new specifications, HDMI approaches the capabilities of DisplayPort 2.1, thus expanding the possibilities of filmmakers and game developers.
The maximum data transfer speed of version 2.1 of 48 Gbps has been doubled to 96 Gbps, so high-resolution image information will require less compression during transmission, and in addition, with higher color depth. In practice, this means even more details and more fluid movement during the transmission of content intended for display, which can be exploited mainly by applications written for virtual reality.
2025: how much money is the home office worth to you?
Here are our 2025 forecasts for the IT labor market.
A new type of cable will also be necessary to exploit the greater bandwidth than ever before, these will be the Ultra96 cables, which operate at a distance of two meters at the mentioned performance level. No big changes should be expected in terms of the connector. Support for Latency Indication Protocol, i.e. LIP, which supports the synchronization of audio and video, is another important functional innovation that will benefit, for example, users of soundbars.
The partners will receive the exact HDMI 2.2 specification in the first half of the year, which will be finalized by the consortium in April, so it will not be supported by hardware arriving in the near future. The new HDMI cables can be expected to be slightly more expensive than traditional cables in the year the standard is introduced, but as soon as TV and graphics card manufacturers start to adapt, prices may drop.
