According to the head of research activities at the General Hospital in Sobos, Jerneja Farkaš Lainščak, factors that contribute to a shorter life expectancy in Pomurci include insufficient exercise, unhealthy diet, obesity and risky alcohol consumption.

A two-day scientific conference of the Pomurska academico znanstvena unija (PAZU) is taking place in Murska Sobota, which will conclude on Saturday. At the conference, they are focusing on issues related to life expectancy in Pomurje. At the opening round table, experts discussed the reasons why life expectancy in the region is shorter than elsewhere in Slovenia, as well as measures to improve it.

Farkaš Lainščak presented the results of a survey on heart failure among residents of Murska Sobota, which showed an above-average proportion of heart failure in this population. “If the normal frequency of heart failure in the general population is between one and two percent, we found that in Pomurje, this proportion is between four and five percent. When we transfer these data to the regional and national level, the numbers are even higher,” she warned.

She also mentioned other factors that contribute to the poor health of Pomur residents. The region is significantly more burdened by premature mortality due to cardiovascular disease, greater morbidity and a higher overall mortality rate. “Unhealthy lifestyles such as lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, high levels of obesity and risky alcohol consumption contribute to this,” said Farkaš Lainščak.

Preparation of a strategy for regional development

The Minister of Cohesion and Regional Development also participated in the round table Aleksander Jevšeknamely Prekmurec, who drew attention to the broader problem of inconsistent regional development and its impact on the quality of life in the region. “Inconsistent regional development affects demographic trends, a negative age structure and a lower quality of life. This is also reflected in the lower life expectancy of the inhabitants of Pomurje,” he said.

Jevšek announced that next year the ministry will start preparing strategies for regional development, which will include measures to improve the quality of life in less developed regions. However, he emphasized that coherent regional development is not only the task of the Ministry of Regional Development, but of all departments – from health to education. “With funds from the cohesion funds, we want to finance projects that will contribute to improving the quality of life,” he explained.

In two days, the Pazu conference will discuss many issues from the fields of social sciences, medicine, humanities and natural sciences, with a special emphasis on the health and well-being of the inhabitants of Pomurje. Among the topics discussed are stress, dementia, innovation in the EU and the impact of modern technologies.
