The Freedom Party made history in Styria: according to the latest forecasts, the party achieved 34.8 percent in the provincial parliamentary elections in Styria and won first place for the first time. The ÖVP finished a distant second with 26.8 percent, it wrote eXXpress.
After the huge election victory, Herbert Kickl, the president of the Freedom Party (FPÖ), thanked him for the victory on social media and also sent a message to Karl Nehammer:
We are deeply touched and grateful for the great support! Today is a historic day for Styria and our entire pro-freedom family.
– wrote Kickl.
The election is “a clear no to the losing coalition that Nehammer and Babler are currently working on.”
In his position as the leader of the FPÖ, he also demanded the resignation of Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer:
So it can be assumed that Nehammer will resign tonight. Anything else would be absurd after such a defeat by the People’s Party.
We previously wrote that Austrian Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen entrusted Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) with the formation of the government despite the fact that the right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) won the most votes in the parliamentary elections. Nehammer wants a potential coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), however, the two parties together would only obtain a small majority in the parliament (92 out of 183 seats), which may require the inclusion of a third party, probably the liberal NEOS.
