Slovak hockey player Ondrej Molnár will not go to prison for now.
This week, the District Court in Nitra decided on his punishment for attacking an opponent during a floorball match.
The youth representative and, in the past, also a prospect for the NHL, was threatened with ten years behind bars at the upper rate.
He ended up getting off probation for two years. Molnár must also pay a financial penalty. The sentence is not final and both the prosecutor and the defendant have appealed against it.
The case is almost two years old. In December 2022, Molnár, as a pupil of the Nitra Vocational High School, attacked an opponent from the Janek Kráľ Gymnasium in Zlaté Moravce at the school floorball tournament.
Molnár should have punched him in the face and also hit him with his knee, causing him to break his jaw. The victim had to undergo an operation.
He was also supposed to attack another student, hitting him in the face with his knee. The teenager’s tongue was stuck and he could not breathe.
“The defendant was found guilty of the crime of bodily harm in conjunction with the continuing offense of disorderly conduct and was given a summary sentence of imprisonment for a period of two years with a conditional suspension of probation for a period of 18 months,” ocourt spokeswoman Lena Kiradžiev told Nový Čas.
She added that at the same time, the defendant was ordered to compensate the injured party for damages of 2,822.02 euros, and the rest of the right to compensation was referred to a civil process.
