But the fugitive’s ‘fame’ was much earlier: already in the eighties and nineties he had been indicated as possibly responsible for some robberies of jewelery shops, cash vans and more, only to be later acquitted. In 1999 he was arrested because he was identified by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate as a person involved in a cigarette smuggling operation. In 2013, Bonalumi’s name also ended up in an investigation by the Genoa Prosecutor’s Office on yacht theft and receiving stolen goods for the black market aimed abroad. The Foggia native was arrested with a precautionary custody order, together with his ‘right-hand man’ Federico De Matteis, who was also convicted in the Goldfinger case.
In the past, Bonalumi has already spent time in prison on several occasions. In one case this occurred after a conviction for corruption and attempted extortion against public officials: he had masterminded a robbery in the vault of the Bank of Italy in Anconain 2012, which could have led to up to 200 million euros in stolen goods, replacing the real banknotes with fake copies to delay the discovery of the theft. He was arrested in Fermo, in his residence, while organizing the coup.
The list of crimes for which the Foggiano has been investigated is long. Currently on Bonalumi penis a imprisonment order for cumulation of sentences. As mentioned, the total is 13 years, four months and 11 days. In January 2021 he disappeared, and the search began. Which ended today.
“The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the work and the patient and incessant commitment of those who work to guarantee the security of our country”, declared the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi. “It is a strong and clear signal: the State is present wherever there is a need to fight crime and illegality. My thanks go to all the women and men of the police forces for the professionalism and sense of duty demonstrated”.
