A woman was shocked to discover she had breast cancer despite showing no symptoms.
Julie Grabham, from Lampeter, Wales, attended a routine screening in 2022 and didn’t believe anything.
While in the waiting room, she even posted on social media, encouraging others to follow suit.
Speaking for Wales Onlineshe said: “I was very excited about this initiative: “I made a post on social media telling other women to get screened too and I said I know it’s uncomfortable but it could save your life – I didn’t know what I was in for.
“When I got the news, it shouldn’t have been a surprise to me, but it was.”
The 54-year-old woman had never had a cancer scare before and lived a healthy and active lifestyle.
He struggled with the shock of the diagnosis
She did her best to stay positive after hearing the news, but said she struggled with the shock of the diagnosis as well as going through treatment.
“I always say that with cancer you also have anxiety because you’re constantly on alert,” she said.
“I continued to work because it helps keep me busy.
“I didn’t want to indulge, or think too much about everything, so I try to move on and have different focuses.
“My family says I need to take it slow, but for me that’s not an option and they’re used to me now.”
Julie had her tumor removed and underwent radiation therapy. Since then, she has been declared cured of cancer.
She will continue to receive hormone therapy for 10 years to slow or stop the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors.
Julie is also hoping to start her Zometa infusions soon, which should reduce her risk of developing bone cancer – a common secondary cancer that can occur after breast cancer.
Julie said: “I’m feeling good health-wise, I’m feeling really motivated because it’s breast cancer awareness month and my cancer group, who I meet with monthly at The Angel Inn, near Porthcawl , it was very helpful.”
She is scheduled for annual mammograms for the next five years to make sure the cancer does not return.
Now Julie is calling on the government to legislate for employees to be given paid time off to have cancer screenings.
