United’s historic evening becomes tragic after Zirkzee’s angry gesture: replaced before half-time, he decided to retreat to the changing rooms before returning to the boos.
The adventure of Joshua Zirkzee took a very bad turn in the last game which could mark a breaking point with the Manchester United. The team led by Ruben Amorim is in the midst of a storm and the Dutchman was one of the scapegoats for yet another match that failed before half-time, even if this time he decided to react: his coach replaced him in the 33rd minutewhen United were already 2-0 down, and the striker he protested by refusing to sit on the bench along with the rest of his companions.
Zirkzee’s reaction after the change
The Red Devils did not expect to have to struggle like this even after the change on the bench, but the situation has not improved since the season’s farewell. Amorim has started using Zirkzee more frequently but the Dutchman’s impact so far has been disappointing. Even against Newcastle he was impalpable, as was the rest of the team who were already 2-0 down within half an hour. To try to change the inertia of the match, the coach decided to make some changes before the break and it was the Dutchman who paid the price, being recalled to the bench in the 33rd minute.
An unexpected gesture that annoyed him a lot, especially because none of his teammates in attack were doing better. Amorim preferred to use Kobbie Mainoo but Zirkzee didn’t take well to the idea of the change before the break. For this reason he grabbed his jacket, but instead of sitting on the bench he ran straight into the tunnel that leads to the changing rooms as a gesture of spite. At the moment of the substitution, all of Old Trafford was noisy with whistles and groans, aimed at the player but also at Amorim’s choice to do without him in such a delicate moment.
