David Popovici (19 years old) managed to qualify in the semifinals of the 100 meters freestyle event of the Olympic Games with a time of 47.92, the third of the series.

Earlier, on Monday evening, the Romanian champion won the gold medal in the 200 meters freestyle, ahead of the British Matt Richards by only two hundredths of a second.
The Englishman was so frustrated at missing out on Olympic gold that he promised David Popovici he would get revenge in the 100m freestyle, according to the BBC.
Matt Richards admitted that “Monday night’s agonizing silver added fuel to the fire”. Later, the swimmer from Great Britain came with a warning for David Popovici.
“Let Popovici be sure that I will try to make up for it!”, was the message that Matt Richards sent to the Romanian swimmer, according to the publication BBC.
In the semifinals of the 100-meter freestyle, Matt Richards qualified with the 13th time.
David Popovici qualified in the penultimate act with the third fastest time of the series, 47.92 seconds, behind Jack Alexy, 47.57, and Maxime Grousset, 47.70.
The semi-finals of the 100 meters free will be played today, July 30, starting at 9:30 p.m., and can be watched on TV on Eurosport and TVR 1 channels.
