He tried to steal a car. The electric doors trapped him inside.

Just imagine the surprise of a Miami Beach resident who, after eating a tasty breakfast, goes to the parking lot, goes to his car and finds a thief locked inside. And this is a true story, which is all the funnier because it was recorded on video, so we can all see how 33-year-old Ravesh Rabindranauth, as that is the name of the unlucky thief, asks the owner of the car, Julio Solano, for help in getting out of it.

The Chevrolet Corvette has been equipped with electric door openers for several generations, and the C8 is no exception, although this solution is often a source of frustration for owners, and there are also situations where turned out to be a deadly trap. Recently, a man experienced such a situation and had to contact emergency services by calling 911 for help.

In 2015, a man and his dog died of heatstroke after a loose cable cut off the power, preventing them from opening doors, rolling down windows or sounding their horn. So how are these cars allowed on the road? As it turns out, the door can be opened in such a situation using a manual switch located on the floor near the seats.

This information is described in detail in the Chevrolet Corvette user manual, but as you can see, not everyone reads it and is aware of it. And it was similar in the case of the Miami Beach thief, so the electric door locking system proved impossible for him too.

As a result, we can see and hear the exchange between the thief and the owner of the car. This the first one asks for help getting out of the car, the second one refuses and explains that since “it’s not your car, it’s my car”, it is necessary to call the police.

After the officers arrived at the scene, Rabindranauth gave a statement and a records check revealed no local criminal history or outstanding arrest warrants. As a result, the man was charged with burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and is currently being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Police said it was unclear how the man got into the car. The car rental company Premiere Auto Miami 1, which stores its vehicles in the garage, was also notified about the incident.
