Head of Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service: Russians want to win the war by 2026
Kirilo Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Service, said that Russia wants to win the war against Ukraine by the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026, because it will face serious economic problems from the summer of 2025 and will have to mobilize more many troops, writes the Interfax-Ukraine agency, quoted by Ukrainian Pravda.
During the 20th annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES) in Kiev, Budanov stated that “the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 is a crucial moment for them (Russians – no). So they want to end all this (the war) by then. Because, according to their own calculations, if they do not come out of this war considering themselves victorious, in the long term – in the next 30 years – the Russian Federation will lose the superpower status it aspires to”.
According to the Ukrainian spy chief, Russia predicts that “the negative impact on their economy will start to be very visible around the summer of 2025.”
Putin’s peace conditions
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed his requirements to end hostilities in Ukraineone day before the start of the peace summit in Switzerland regarding Ukraine.
He said he would agree to a ceasefire if Ukraine withdrew its troops from Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye, the four regions that Russia partially occupies and which it claims to have annexed.
In addition to this requirement, Putin’s second condition is that Ukraine officially renounces the idea of joining NATO.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on several occasions that he rejects these conditions, wanting peace to be made respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
