Heat leaves more than 50 municipalities in eight districts at maximum risk of fire – Climate

More than 50 municipalities in eight districts are at maximum risk of fire this Monday due to the hot weather, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which has placed almost the entire continent under orange warning.

More than 50 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Santarém, Bragança, Vila Real and Guarda are at maximum risk of fire.

The highest maximum temperature expected will be reached in Évora and Santarém, with 42 degrees Celsius.

The district of Beja will have a temperature of 40 degrees, Portalegre of 39, Castelo Branco 38, Vila Real 36, Bragança and Viseu 35, Guarda 33 and Faro 31.

The IPMA also placed several municipalities in all districts of mainland Portugal, except Viana do Castelo, at very high and high risk of fire.

According to IPMA calculations, the fire danger will remain high in some districts at least until Friday.

This risk, determined by IPMA, has five levels, ranging from low to high, and calculations are obtained from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

Due to the heat, IPMA issued an orange warning for 11 districts between today and Wednesday due to the forecast of hot weather.

The districts of Évora, Setúbal, Santarém, Beja and Portalegre will be under orange warning between 9 am this Monday and 6 pm on Wednesday.

The districts of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Vila Real, Castelo Branco and Braga will be under an orange warning between 9:00 am on Tuesday and 6:00 pm on Wednesday.

The districts of Porto, Faro, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro and Coimbra will be under a yellow warning between 9 am this Monday and 6 pm on Wednesday due to the persistence of very high maximum temperatures.

The Madeira archipelago is also under a yellow warning until 6pm on Wednesday due to the hot weather.

The orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “meteorological situation of moderate to high risk” and yellow when there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

The IPMA forecasts hot weather for the mainland this Monday, with partly cloudy or clear skies, generally weak winds from the east, sometimes strong in the highlands of the north and center until mid-morning, and a rise in maximum temperatures, which will be accentuated on the coast and in the south.

Minimum temperatures will range between 14 degrees Celsius (in Coimbra) and 23 (in Portalegre) and maximum temperatures between 28 (in Aveiro) and 42 (in Évora and Santarém).

In Funchal, temperatures will vary between 23 and 27 degrees and in Porto Santo between 21 and 26 degrees.
