The great return of the summer holidays concludes this Sunday after a weekend with record figures in Spanish airports, high occupancy on trains and heavy traffic on the roads, which has been aggravated by the passage of a DANA that has left intense rains and storms.
September starts mostly with the return from summer holidays for many drivers, but also with the start of summer break for others and the usual movements of a weekend.
Caution for DANA
All of this has caused heavy traffic on the country’s main roads, especially around large cities such as Madrid, Barcelona and Seville and in the coastal areas of Murcia and Cadiz.
In addition, the Traffic Department has asked drivers to take extreme caution due to a DANA that has seen off the hot August of 2024 with rain and strong storms in a large part of the peninsula.
Although the return is taking place in stages throughout the weekend, the largest number of trips will be recorded this Sunday, especially in the afternoon.
Two accidents are hampering traffic on the A2 near Torrejón de Ardoz and another on the A5 in Navalcarnero, which is causing the closure of the left lane and traffic jams of up to 4 kilometres. The DGT is awaiting a third accident, in this case in the Valencian municipality of Loriguilla in the direction of Valencia.
Furthermore, at around 2pm, traffic was starting to slow down on the A1 in El Vellón, on the A3 in Rivas, and on the A42 in Parla, all in Madrid.
Slow traffic on the AP-7
In Andalusia there are problems on the AP4 in Seville, in Cabezas de San Juan in both directions; in Cadiz, on the A 48, in El Marquesado in the direction of the capital of Cadiz and, in this same province, on the A7, in Sotogrande towards Marbella; in the same way, there are complications on the A49 in Bollullos Par del Condado (Huelva) towards the capital of Seville.
In the Mediterranean area, traffic is slow in Murcia, specifically on the A7 in Espinardo towards Alicante, and also in Barcelona, on the AP-7 in Sant Celoni, towards the Catalan capital.
According to SCT forecasts
Up to 250,000 vehicles will return to the Barcelona metropolitan area today
The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) estimates that around 250,000 vehicles will return to the Barcelona metropolitan area today. During the morning, the main delays were concentrated on the AP-7 north with around 6.5 km of heavy traffic between Sant Celoni and Vilalba Sasserra, and around 4 km of slow traffic in Fogars de la Selva. At the same time, the C-65 has accumulated up to 5 km of stoppages between Santa Cristina d’Aro and Llagostera.
Finally, there are traffic jams in Cantabria, on the A8 in Castro Urdiales in the direction of Laredo.
The special summer return plan that the DGT launched last Friday will end at midnight tonight, when it is estimated that almost 4.7 million road trips will have been made.
Fixed and mobile speed control radars, Pegasus helicopters, drones, cameras, vans and camouflaged motorcycles have controlled traffic during these days.
