ACCEPT YOUR IMPOSSIBILITY DIRTY DEAL TEATRO Director Reinis Suhanovs ★★★★
A small, slyly romantic stage with crumpled backdrops and drooping, red angel hair, where some harmless, cuddly romp could take place for the very little ones. The material – the yellow cellophane, from which the backdrops are made – immediately conveys and creates friction with the first association and is more reminiscent of a closed crime scene. Director and scenographer Reinis Suhanovs, who likes to think in visual images in the theater, Dirty Deal Teatro in the opening performance of the season, he seems to have let very far into his inner artist’s laboratory and feelings. With every sense, the viewer can feel what it’s like when, in Shakespeare’s words, “the world has fallen off its hinges” and only the interrupted act of creation is possible.
“The show will visually challenge the ever-present eternal battle between the sun and the beyond, touching on the fear of all of us about our impotence in the face of war and climate change, as well as the desire to preserve pure love and joy to leave to future generations,” – this time the annotation is very accurate and really corresponds to what is seen. Confusion, disorientation, nothing holding together and not fulfilling its functions. Tanning ends with burns from a hot iron on the stomach, and container cows begin to eat the stage, sucking the scenery into their “mouths”.
Sukhanov does not give answers to his many questions, which are most likely relevant to everyone – both art creator and consumer – but he inoculates uncomfortable questions under the viewer’s skin, and you also become a little nervous in the search for impossible harmony. Accept your helplessness denies the viewer even the slightest illusion of harmony. A black cube wobbles, touching the ground at only one point. The mouse explodes. Nonsensical drill and ventilation noises interrupt all kinds of pleasures, both carnal and reading a book.
The show has some kinship in mood with French electro opera The fallwith which the cultural space Hansa platform recently celebrated its five-year anniversary. The same cross-genre mix and existential moods, only Reinis Suhanovs with stage colleagues and co-authors – Sandija Dovgani and Agri Krapivnicki – add the element of object theater.
Maybe Accept your helplessness the structure is a bit too loose and self-encapsulated, but the impetus for reflection is given very precisely. Various associations arose with the history of art – the responses of artists in the twilight moments of humanity. I would name Juan Miró, Salvador Dali, René Magritte as the first. The world brewed by the team of the show in black surgeon-chef suits and masks is, to put it mildly, not very inspiring, but what to do with the world’s first or last egg of life – break it up or try to keep it whole – in your own life, fortunately, everyone can decide for themselves even in the most turbulent times.
