Help clean up trash on water bodies and win 200 euros!

The Big Cleanup movement invites Latvian residents who are relaxing by water bodies to take part in a garbage collection campaign and change their habits. By participating in the collection of water garbage, you can get a chance to win 200 euros! This is what the Latvian media writes.

Boaters, SUP (SUP surfing) enthusiasts, fishermen and other fans of active recreation who can reach hard-to-reach places on Latvian rivers and lakes actively participate in this campaign. Last year, SUP enthusiasts already helped clean up water bodies during the World Cleanup in Latvia “Save Our Sea”, for example, in Valmiera they removed garbage, including glass and PET bottles, from the Gauja River.

Vita Jaunzemethe organizer of the Big Cleanup movement and the coordinator of the World Cleanup in Latvia, explains that although the inhabitants of the Baltic Sea enjoy its beaches, they often do not realize that it is one of the most polluted seas in the world. Intensive use, pollution from agriculture and domestic wastewater, as well as human habits, harm the sea’s ecosystem. The low salinity of the Baltic Sea also reduces the concentration of oxygen, making its habitat more vulnerable.

However, every planted tree, well-designed wastewater system and organic farm helps restore the sea. However, household chemicals, medicines and plastics used daily continue to pollute the water.

To participate in the water litter collection campaign, take a photo or video of your “litter hunt” on Latvian rivers, lakes and seashores from today until October 1. Capture the litter you have pulled out of the water or found on the banks of water bodies.

Post your photos and videos on social media with the hashtag #SvinamDa(r)bu. The author of the most creative story will receive a gift certificate for 200 euros. The winner will be announced on October 10 after the World Cleanup. Full terms and conditions can be found on the website www.talkas.lv.

Let us remind you that the World Cleanup will take place on September 20, and in Latvia the events will continue on September 20 and 21, so that as many people as possible can take part in this important event.
