Married life is an adventure made up of ups and downs. There are moments of joy, complicity, but also moments when one or the other feels upset, stressed or overwhelmed by events. A simple question can change everything and strengthen your emotional connection.
Every day it often happens that we are stressed, overworked, worried about routine, work, ecology… In these moments, it is not always easy to know how to comfort our partner. Instead of assuming what he/she needs or offering unsolicited advice, there is one simple but powerful question that makes all the difference.
Dr. Jade Jackson, a licensed mental health counselor in Dallas, shares this magic phrase with the New York Times: “What can I do for you right now?”
It has the power to clarify your partner’s needs, calm strong emotions, and strengthen your relationship. It is a sign of deep empathy. Instead of assuming what your partner wants or needs, you explicitly ask their permission to help them in whatever way works best for them. This intentional step shows that you are there for him.
After he takes a few minutes to think about it, he can tell you if he wants to talk about it, if you’re helping him make a decision, or if he needs a hug (hugs are usually the answer to everything). Or at least a starting point.
