As promised, a nine-minute long “technical presentation” of the Playstation 5 Pro was held Playstation’s YouTube channel during Tuesday afternoon. The broadcast was led by Playstation chief architect Mark Cerny, who described that we can expect a console with significantly better graphics performance than the original version of Playstation 5, without going into details.
However, we did get a glimpse of what the Playstation 5 Pro will look like, and just like most things pointed out, the Playstation 5 Pro is white and has three stripes on the side. It also lacks a disc reader, which has been a rumor that circulated but which many were skeptical about.
The presentation began by talking about the Playstation 5, and how developers were sometimes frustrated by not being able to deliver graphics performance. Therefore, Sony’s focus in the development of the Playstation 5 Pro has been precisely on graphics performance.
This has resulted in three focus areas: larger GPU, AI-driven upscaling and advanced ray tracing. The presentation showed examples of how much more powerful the Playstation 5 Pro is in comparison to the Playstation 5 in games such as The Last of Us 2, where the new console reaches up to 60 fps where the predecessor only reached 30 fps. As rumored, the AI-powered upscaling Sony is talking about is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
According to Cerny, the hardware upgrades in the PS5 Pro will result in 45 percent faster rendering, where the goal is that players should not have to compromise between performance and high graphics quality.
Official info on specs from the PS blog
On the official playstation blog Here’s what it says about the three areas of focus and how they affect PS5 Pro performance:
-
Upgraded GPU: PS5 Pro has a GPU with 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory, which provides up to 45% faster rendering for a smoother gaming experience.
-
Advanced ray tracing: A more powerful ray tracing technology that enables more dynamic light reflections and refractions, where light rays are calculated up to three times faster than on the current PS5.
-
AI-powered scaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) uses machine learning to improve image quality and sharpness by adding unprecedented levels of detail.
We’re still waiting to delve into more detailed specs. Worth noting is that 2 TB SSD and wifi 7 support are mentioned on the blog. However, nothing is mentioned about Dolby Vision or HDR 10+.
The PS5 Pro will be released on November 7 and has a price tag of 799.99 euros. No Swedish price information has been communicated, but it is probably to be expected that the price will be north of SEK 9,000.
