Here’s what Samsung Wallet does – differences vs Google Wallet

We explain how Samsung Wallet benefits you.

Samsung Wallet was previously called Samsung Pay, but the name of the service was changed partly to highlight that there are more functions than payments, partly because Google changed the name of its corresponding service.

First and foremost, it’s still a way to blip your payments with your mobile phone. You insert your bank card into the mobile, and then you can use your mobile as an alternative to payment cards in shops. It works by creating a virtual card in your mobile that is approved by your bank and has its own card number, this is to prevent your card number from being leaked.

The mobile phone’s NFC circuit can just as easily be used for other functions where contactless identification is used, and that is why it is now called a wallet. You can also insert membership cards, and for some car brands you can use your mobile as a car key. But for us Swedes, the support for these extra functions is still narrow and it is payments that are the main number.

Differences to Google Wallet: Google Wallet has a similar set of functions, but while Samsung Wallet supports almost all Swedish banks, Google Wallet has gaps, and cannot, for example, be used with bank cards from SEB, Handelsbanken or Ica Banken.

Google Wallet is active as soon as your phone is unlocked, and you don’t need to open any special app, just point the phone at a reader when it’s unlocked. It makes the function smooth, but the security depends on how you manage your lock screen. Whoever can unlock your phone can also pay with it.

Samsung Pay requires you to swipe up from the bottom of the phone to activate, and to initiate a payment you need to identify yourself with a special PIN or fingerprint. This makes it a little more complicated to make a payment, but considerably more difficult for someone else to pay with your mobile.
