Google connects Spotify with its Gemini AI assistant: Here’s what it means for users

Spotify is getting support for Google’s Gemini extensions, which will allow users to search and play music with a generative AI assistant using natural language requests.

The functionality was first spotted in the Google app’s code in June, and is now gradually rolling out to compatible Android devices, 9to5Google reports.

Gemini can play music by searching by song titles, artist names, album names, playlists or by specific activity. However, it will not currently create playlists or radio stations on Spotify.

It’s important to note that if you’ve already connected another music service like YouTube Music, you must specify verbally or textually which service you want Gemini to use in the initial request. After that, the assistant will default to the last selected service.

Spotify is the second app outside the Google ecosystem to get support for Gemini functionality, after WhatsApp got the feature in October.

Google’s support page for this extension explains that you first need to link your Spotify and Google accounts to enable Gemini apps. You also need to activate Gemini Apps Activity, which can store your AI queries for up to 72 hours, The Verge.

The Spotify extension will not be available within the Google Messages app, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS. This functionality only works when the Gemini language is set to English.
