Here’s what we already know about the Pixel 9a (which will probably come out sooner)

Google launched the new Pixel 9 line in August. Traditionally, in addition to the normal devices, we can also expect an A-model, which is cheaper. Here’s what we already know about the Pixel 9a.

The current Pixel 9 can be ordered in four variants: the regular Pixel 9, the Pixel 9 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the Pixel Pro Fold. The Pixel 9a, which Google will probably present next year (more about that in a moment), should be a cheaper alternative.

This summer it already seemed like that new renders from Onleaks have confirmed that news: Google is moving away from the camera bar with the Google Pixel 9a, which has been a feature of the Pixel phones in recent years. Instead of a bar, the camera on the new 9a can be found in a pill-shaped camera island on the back of the phone.

Phone would be released two months earlier

Furthermore, the renders show that the Pixel 9a actually looks a lot like the most recent iPhone models (and the other Pixel 9 devices that have already been presented). The corners of the device are rounded and the sides are flat. The screen edges of the Pixel 9a appear thicker than those of the more expensive Pixel 9 models, but that is not surprising given the price of the budget phone.

It also seems that we can expect the device, just like this summer’s Pixel 9 models, earlier than usual. According to Android Headlines the Pixel 9a will be launched in March next year, about two months earlier than, for example, the Pixel 8a, which was released last May. Android 16 would also probably be released earlier than usual next year.

Not much is known yet about the specifications of the Pixel 9a. Android Headlines does say that we can expect the Pixel 9a in four colors: Porcelain, Obsidian, Peony and Iris. We already know the first three from the Pixel 9 devices, among others, but Iris (a mix between purple and blue) is new. The device would also be slightly larger than its predecessor, but slightly thinner at 8.5 mm.
