Apple prepares to release iOS 18.1 next week, a highly anticipated update that introduces important features for the hearing health on AirPods Pro 2as well as news related to Apple Intelligence in the USA.
The update will include three main new features for AirPods Pro 2: hearing protection, hearing test e hearing aid functionality. Last month, Apple obtained FDA (Food and Drug Administration) clearance for these features, confirming their clinical validity.
One of the most significant innovations is the possibility of perform a hearing test directly from your iPhone. This test works by playing a series of tones at different frequencies, requiring the user to respond as in a real audiometric test performed by a professional. The results are saved in the app Salute and, based on the data collected, users can adjust the sound of the AirPods in a personalized way.
If the test indicates some form of hearing loss, the AirPods Pro 2 they automatically configure themselves to act as hearing aids, amplifying sounds in real time. As explained by Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple’s Vice President of Health: “After you complete the hearing test, your AirPods Pro transform into a personalized hearing aid, enhancing specific sounds you need in real time, like parts of speech or ambient sounds.”
Another key feature introduced with iOS 18.1 concerns the hearing protection. This technology constantly monitors your surroundings and automatically reduces loud sounds, such as traffic noise or loud music, in real time. This system will be integrated into all listening modes available on AirPods Pro 2, including active noise cancellation and transparency mode.
