After his serious injury in the friendly against Energie Cottbus, Fabian Reese of Hertha BSC recently publicly criticized his opponent. The third division club has now reacted to the criticism from Berlin and verbally fired back.
For Hertha star Fabian Reese, the preseason preparations could hardly have gone more unluckily. In the middle of the hot phase, the offensive player injured his ankle in the friendly match in Cottbus (2:2) last week.
The 26-year-old will have to take a break for up to ten weeks with a tear in his syndesmosis ligament after Energie defender Filip Kusic brutally kicked him from behind.
The opponent’s behavior triggered an angry reaction from Reese, because in his view Kusic did not offer an adequate apology for the foul. In an Instagram post, the Hertha player accused the opponent of a lack of sportsmanship.
In Cottbus, they do not want to leave the accusations as they are. “Our player Filip Kusic is being exposed, insulted and publicly denounced. Objectivity is being confronted with great emotion and should be brought back to a normal human level,” the club shot back at Reese in a statement on Sunday.
Hertha star receives insulting chants in Cottbus
It is not true “that there was no apology from Filip Kusic. The FC Energie defender went to Fabian Reese again during the first drinks break of the friendly match to apologize to him personally. This should be formulated and made clear in this form,” Energie Cottbus demanded.
Kusic was flooded with hate messages on social media after the foul. The 28-year-old has now made his Instagram profile private.
From Cottbus’ point of view, Reese is at least partly to blame. His post was “not conducive” to an objective discourse.
At the same time, the third division newcomers were conciliatory and criticized the behavior of their own fans, some of whom had greeted Reese with homophobic chants when he was substituted.
“This has nothing to do with football and the values of our club. On the contrary!” the club clarified.
