Hezbollah fires rockets at Israeli air base

In response to ‘repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanon’, the militant group Hezbollah has fired rockets at the Israeli airbase Ramat David.

The Lebanese group announced this on the night of Sunday on the messaging service Telegram, according to Reuters.

The air base is located in northern Israel about 20 kilometers southeast of the city of Haifa and about 50 kilometers from the border with Lebanon.

According to Hezbollah, the group has fired ‘dozens’ of rockets.

The Israeli military, the IDF, states that about 10 rockets have crossed the border, but that most of them have been shot down. This is written by the Israeli media Times of Israel.

The IDF states that at least one rocket has fallen in the area around the air base. A man in his 60s is slightly injured after he was hit by a fragment from a downed rocket, doctors said, according to the Times of Israel.

The Israeli military said on Saturday it had launched new strikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. The state-run Lebanese news agency NNA describes it as a large-scale attack.

Early on the night of Sunday, no one reported whether there were any injuries or deaths in connection with the latest attacks in Lebanon.

Also earlier on Saturday, there were reports of fighting in the conflict, which has been characterized by almost daily shelling since October last year, but has flared up further since late August.

On Saturday afternoon it was heard from the Israeli military that Hezbollah had fired ‘around’ 90 rockets at Israel.

The information has not been independently verified.

On Friday, at least 37 were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. This was stated by the Lebanese Ministry of Health earlier on Saturday. Those killed include, among others, the senior military leader Ibrahim Aqil.

Friday’s attack – as well as explosions in walkie-talkies and pagers belonging to Hezbollah members – has raised fears of an escalation between Israel and Hezbollah.

The fear of a major attack from Hezbollah led the Israeli authorities on Saturday to introduce a number of restrictions in northern Israel – including in the port city of Haifa. The Times of Israel writes.

The restrictions mean, among other things, that residents are advised not to gather more than 30 people outdoors.

Many assume that Israel is behind Friday’s explosions. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the deadly electronic equipment explosions that injured thousands in Lebanon. At least 39 were killed.
