‘High School Sharpshooter’ Ban Hyo-jin becomes Korea’s 100th Olympic Gold Medalist

The youngest member of the team has really hit the mark. ‘High school genius shooter’ Ban Hyo-jin (16, Daegu Physical Education High School) has sounded the golden gun and become the youngest person in the history of the Summer Olympics and the 100th gold medalist in the history of the Korean sport. Following the women’s archery team’s 10th consecutive gold medal win in the team event, a series of monumental good news has been delivered in the history of Korean sports.

On the 29th, Ban Hyo-jin won a gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle final at the 2024 Paris Olympics shooting event held at the Chateauroux Shooting Center in France. Korea, which has won 99 gold medals in the women’s archery team event in the history of the Summer Olympics, achieved its 100th gold medal thanks to Byun Hyo-jin’s cheerful rebellion.

Born in 2007, Ban Hyo-jin also set a new record as the ‘youngest Olympic medalist’ in Korean history. Ban Hyo-jin, who won a medal at the age of 16 years, 10 months, and 18 days, broke the record of Yoon Young-sook (17 years, 21 days at the time), who won the gold medal in the women’s team archery event at the 1988 Seoul Games. This is a great feat in just three years since she first took up archery in 2021.

In both shooting and archery, the Korean women’s strong hearts shone. Ban Hyo-jin pulled the trigger more calmly than anyone else on the final stage. Ban Hyo-jin, who had a fierce competition for the lead with China’s Huang Yu-ting from the beginning of the competition, was tied with 251.8 points until the last shot, but in the single-shot shoot-off that followed, she scored 10.4 points, defeating Huang Yu-ting who shot 10.3 points by 0.1. When the gold medal was confirmed, Ban Hyo-jin, whose expression had not changed throughout the competition, smiled brightly and returned to her typical high school girl appearance, reveling in her joy. Ban Hyo-jin, who set a new Olympic record with a total of 634.5 points in the 60-shot preliminary round held the day before, also tied the final record with 251.8 points in the final round that day. Ban Hyo-jin said, “(When I went to the shoot-off) I thought it was a gold medal opportunity given by heaven. I really took that one shot more seriously,” and “I’m so happy to have won the gold medal. But I don’t want to stop here. I want to go further and become a better player who grows even more,” he said confidently.

Before Ban Hyo-jin, the Korean women’s archery team achieved the record of 10 consecutive Olympic team victories. The Korean women’s archery team, consisting of Im Si-hyeon (21, Korea National Sport University), Nam Su-hyeon (19, Suncheon City Hall), and Jeon Hun-yeong (30, Incheon City Hall), defeated China 5-4 (56-53 55-54 51-54 53-55) in the final of the women’s team archery event held at Les Invalides in Paris, France. <29-27>) defeated them. With this, the Korean women’s archery team has won 10 consecutive gold medals, without losing its place as the world’s best female archer for 36 years from Seoul 1988, when the team event was introduced, to Paris 2024.
