Highway speed limit with trailer. In what situations is the driver’s license withheld?

The Highway Code imposes a lower speed limit on motorways and other road categories for vehicles towing a trailer or caravan. And if a driver does not comply with these regulations, he risks being fined and, in certain situations, his driver’s license can be withheld.

Each category of road has a maximum speed limit established by law.

These values differ, however, depending on the area it crosses or the possible dangers that may arise.

Speed limits on roads in Romania

The general speed limits allowed in Romania are:

  • 130 km/h on the highway;
  • 120 km/h on express roads;
  • 100 km/h on European national roads;
  • 90 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county);
  • 50 km/h in the locality.

The road administrator can, however, decide to reduce the maximum speed to no more than 30 km/h.

These limitations may be imposed near intersections, pedestrian crossings, dangerous turns, or high-crash areas.

In addition, the law provides additional restrictions for novice drivers, large vehicles or those towing a trailer or caravan

2024: Highway speed limit with trailer

Drivers who hold a Category B license and want to tow a caravan or trailer must meet several conditions:

  • the weight of the trailer or caravan must not exceed 750 kg;
  • the weight of the assembly, i.e. the pulling vehicle and towed equipment, must not exceed 3,500 kg;
  • the weight of the trailer must not exceed that of the vehicle.

When the weight of the assembly exceeds 3,500 kg, but is up to 4,250 kg, category B “extended” is needed. And if the assembly is over 4.25 tons, then the driver will need a Category BE permit.

The maximum permitted speed outside the towns for vehicles towing trailers or semi-trailers is 10 km/h lower than the maximum permitted speed for the category to which the pulling vehicle belongs”, it is stated in the traffic law.

So the speed limit on the motorway for those towing a trailer or caravan is 120 km/h.

In the case of the other roads, those towing a trailer have the right to travel with a maximum of:

  • 110 km/h on express roads;
  • 90 km/h on European national roads;
  • 80 km/h on the other categories of roads (national or county);
  • 50 km/h in the locality.

In what situations is the driver’s license withheld if you tow a trailer

Exceeding the speed limit is punishable by a fine and, in certain cases, suspension of the driver’s license.

The fine point is 165 lei, and for exceeding the speed, penalties between 2 and 20 fine points are applied.

Penalties applied depending on the speed with which you exceeded the limit:

  • 10 – 20 km/h: 2 – 3 penalty points
  • 21 – 30 km/h: 4 – 5 penalty points
  • 31 – 40 km/h: 6 – 8 penalty points
  • 41 – 50 km/h: 9 – 20 penalty points
  • over 50 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 90 days
  • over 70 km/h: 9 – 20 fine points + driving license suspension for 120 days.

Therefore, drivers who tow a trailer or caravan on the highway and travel at more than 170 km/h will lose their driver’s license.
