Yes, holy words, to God… and then there will be a real democracy, instead of a dictatorship”, without hiding the irony, commented Lithuanian.
In the 19-second clip, the former US first lady and chief of diplomacy actually says: “<…> if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook or Twitter/X or Instagram or TikTok, whatever it is, if they don’t moderate and monitor the content, we lose complete control. And this is not only a social and psychological effect, it is a real damage <…>“
Already from H. Clinton’s words, one can understand that her whole idea is not heard here – it seems as if the phrase is missing both the beginning and the end.
In the lower right corner of the screen is the CNN logo and a “live” icon, so it looks like a longer segment of the conversation has been shared.
You can find quite a few on the internet media reportswhich quoted the same words. But from these messages, it is clear that her idea was different from what the users of social networks are explaining.
“Kids talk to each other”
H. Clinton, who in 1993-2001 was the first lady of the United States, 2009-2013. – secretary of stateand in 2016 herself aspired to become president, a phrase on her social networks accounts and various media outlets on YouTube channels.
True, it is not clear from all the reports what the woman actually spoke to CNN host Michael Smerconish about.
How to excerpt an interview on your YouTube channel pointed out to Sky News Australia, it “warns we will ‘lose total control’ if social media companies don’t regulate content on their platforms.”
The former politician reportedly acknowledged that while steps have been taken to regulate content, the federal government needs to do more.
“We can look at California, of New York states, I think some other states have taken action as well,” according to Fox News. quoted The New York Post. “But we need national action, and unfortunately, our Congress has failed to respond to these threats to our children.”
From this quote, it becomes clear that H. Clinton spoke about the safety of children. She urged repeal Section 230 of the Communications Act, which protects online platforms from liability for third-party content, such as that posted by social media users. This immunity applies to the content itself and to its removal in certain circumstances.
“In my opinion, we should abolish what’s called section 230, which, as you know, gave immunity to internet platforms because they were supposed to be just intermediaries, so they shouldn’t be judged for the content they post.
But now we know that was too simplistic an approach, that if the platforms, whether it’s Facebook, Twitter/X, or Instagram, or TikTok, whatever it is, if they don’t moderate and do not monitor the content, we lose complete control. And this is not only a social and psychological effect, it is a real damage <…>“
Clinton also called for restrictions on the use of cell phones in schools, which has already been done in several states, such as Florida and California. Individual school districts across the country have also instituted policies that prohibit or restrict the use of cell phones during school hours.
“Get rid of phones in schools,” she suggested. – I am very happy to see that schools are starting to do this, that children turn off their phones when they walk in the door.
And guess what. Children pay more attention in class. They talk to each other in the canteen, that’s the kind of thing that was part of your daily life when you were at school.”
Presented his book
Clinton presented her new book “Something Lost, Something Gained” on television. The host of the show mentioned chapters where the author discussed social media and its negative impact on people, especially young people.
“I write in the book that I don’t think our kids are doing well because I think they’ve become addicted to social media, – spoke she – I am convinced that the phones in their pockets have a huge impact on how they spend their time or communicate with other people.
Now we know that very often children are affected by anxiety or depression or all kinds of problems that are at least related to, if not caused by, being connected to screens.”
According to the former first lady, the danger posed by the Internet includes not only social and psychological effects, but also real harm, such as child pornography, threats of violence.
