In memoriam Aurel Nedel, a great painter. If you asked him what he likes in this life, he answered briefly: painting! And don’t exaggerate anything. Not by chance, in recent years, I have invited him several times, you watched him through the careful eye of the cameras. With the help of this wonderful device, we brought Aurel Nedel’s paintings and words into your homes.
Brief chronological data:
He was born on January 17, 1930, in a peasant family from Vaidei village, Romos commune (near Orăștie), Hunedoara county. He followed the courses of the primary school next to the Normal School of Applications, then those of the “Decebal” High School in Deva. He is noticed by the drawing teacher, who urges him to start drawing “after the ancients” and gives him the first notions of Art History.
In 1950, his parents sent him to Bucharest “to become a doctor”. At the student dormitory where he stayed, he met the future painters Traian Brădean and Constantin Blendea, who convinced him to participate with them in the preparatory courses for admission to the Fine Arts Institute.
In the period 1951-1956, he attends the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Fine Arts Institute in Bucharest, first in the class of Professor Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpăna, then in that of Alexandru Ciucurencu, whose fervent disciple he will remain.
He made his debut together with Traian Brădean and Ion Nicodim, in 1956 (November-December), presenting 20 paintings and 5 drawings in the exhibition opened at the “Kalinderu” Hall in Bucharest.
He became a member of the Painting Section of the Plastic Artists Union in 1958.
Since 1960 he has been participating with works in 2013, he has had hundreds of personal or group exhibitions in the country and abroad. The last exhibitions of his reign were in Orăștie, namely in October 2013 when the father and son Aurel and Vladimir Nedel exhibited together, in the exhibition hall in Orăștie and also in 2013, this time in December the master Nedel exhibited paintings and held the conference “Despre Frumos” in the same hall in Orăștie. Both events being organized, directed and curated by Dan Orghici.
In 1997, the master retired to his native village of Vaidei, near Orăștia, far from the hectic world of the capital, where he trained as an artist and established himself with vigor in Romanian art. He built a workshop in the courtyard of his parents’ house where he warmly welcomed numerous guests.
In his moments of respite, he talked affectionately with his niece, the little girl of Vladimir Neder, his younger son, also a painter, settled in Orăstie. Often the two artists worked together.
He passed into eternity in his native village, Vaidei, on January 19, 2014, at the age of 84.
