In the rematch of the 3rd preliminary round of the Conference League against Copenhagen, Ostrava goalkeeper Jakub Markovič did not have to deal with too many serious situations. However, since the match ended 1-0 for the visitors after regular time and the subsequent overtime, penalties had to decide who would advance.
While Markovič shined in the shootout with two accurate saves, his teammates failed from the penalty spot as many as four times.
“Penalties didn’t have to happen at all. It’s a huge shame. It annoys us a lot,” says the 23-year-old goalkeeper, who was quoted by the website sport.cz.
According to the Czech goalkeeper, his team had enough chances to decide the match in regular time.
“We are terribly sorry that we did not manage the last step,” says Markovič.
However, he did not blame his teammates after the match. He also commented on the incident that happened during the penalty draw, when the opponents threw a bottle at him, which had notes about the opposing players.
“The opponent’s goalkeeper had a similar move on his pads. Their player noticed that I had notes on the bottle and so they threw it at the corner flag. They wanted to throw our shooters away from the penalty, which they succeeded in, as our player shot through the goal,” Markovič responds.
