Digital break

The smartphone manufacturer Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has introduced a new detox mode for its Skyline model. This is intended to help make smartphone use more conscious.

Human Mobile Devices (HMD) has a new detox mode for the HMD Skyline announced. This function is part of a current software update and is intended to help users be more conscious about their smartphone use. According to the manufacturer, the mode offers an innovative way to flexibly organize digital breaks in order to improve the balance between the digital world and personal well-being.

Individual breaks with soft lock and hard lock

The HMD Skyline’s Detox Mode includes two options for digital breaks. The “Soft Lock” function enables a gentle time-out that can be ended at any time with one click. For a more intensive digital break, there is the “Hard Lock”, which remains active for up to 48 hours and can only be ended by restarting the device. These variants are intended to make it possible to take short breaks or longer breaks as needed.

Flexible adjustment of the digital time out

According to HMD, the detox mode can be easily activated via a widget on the home screen of the HMD Skyline. Users could individually determine which apps and notifications should be blocked and flexibly determine the duration of the time out. This function is aimed at people who want to minimize digital distractions, be it for a short 20-minute break or an entire weekend without constant availability.

Responding to the growing need for digital detox

With this function, HMD is responding to the increasing desire for conscious smartphone use, especially among younger people. According to a survey by the company, 38 percent of 16 to 24 year olds said they would like better control over their digital usage. The detox mode should help to meet these needs and make everyday life less stressful through digital breaks.
