Although there are a lot of interesting and creepy horror games on the market today, for many, the golden years of horror passed more than twenty years ago on the PS2 console. Whether you loved something less familiar, like running away from creepy stalkers in Haunting Groundor spent hours wandering through dense fog Silent Hill-aif you liked feeling unsettled and threatened, it was a great time to play horror. Hollowbody is a throwback to that golden age of horror, and while it’s not perfect, it’ll give you a dose of nostalgia and maybe even keep you up at night.
Our protagonist, Micaearns a living in the not-so-distant future of the world Hollowbody-a as a black market smuggler, traveling through dangerous locations with her partner Sashom. After it is Sasha decided to explore the exclusion zone without you, she disappeared, and after twelve days of worry, you decide to look for her in this walled world without life. It doesn’t take you long to get stuck in the creepy ruins where people once lived, but it turns out you’re not alone in this place.
If you’ve ever played old school horror games, you’ll feel right at home in Hollowbody-jualthough thankfully no “tank” controls are required for this creepy adventure. Mica is equipped with a pistol and melee weapons in case something goes wrong during her rescue mission, and can use them to deal with monstrous threats if the situation worsens. I won’t pretend that using melee weapons is anything but painful, but I can’t deny that you’ll feel a little more helpless due to the slowness and poor range of your attacks. Guns are much easier to use with target lock, but if you overuse them, you’ll run out of ammo, and that could be fatal for the rest of this terrifying adventure.
Mica’s main mission in the exclusion zone is, of course, to find Sashubut to do this best, she must first get to a high enough point to use her radio effectively. This means you have to climb through an apartment building full of death and things that want to cut you to pieces, and conquer your first dungeon in style Silent Hill-a. In order to pass, you will have to search for keys, hunt for key items and solve puzzles. It won’t be easy, but with a little brainstorming and deft avoidance of danger, you might just survive for a while.
The puzzles will especially remind longtime fans of the genre of old horror games. You have to, for example, calculate someone’s year of birth using mathematical clues found in someone’s apartment, and there is absolutely no “guiding”. This is just one of many brain teasers that will block your progress. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but I have to admit that I found it refreshing to have my skills tested, rather than being immediately presented with the solution to a puzzle as soon as I walked into a room.
The best moments Hollowbody-me they will leave you panicking and sweating, although they are not very frequent, when they happen – they really hit. Discordant music, horrible visuals, and waves of mutated monsters that want to devour you make for a nightmare, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
As much as Hollowbody was a fun horror game, it has a lot of issues that were acceptable in 2002 but aren’t in 2024. At the very least, fighting an awkwardly wobbly camera while under attack is a pain, and the game’s lack of capture points means you’re likely to lose a lot of progress at least a few times during the game’s short duration – which can be frustrating enough to make players put down the controller and do something else.
Perhaps worse than all these problems is the poorly designed map, which is difficult to read and in some areas completely non-existent. When you’re stuck in maze-like environments full of look-alike corridors and rooms, this problem becomes especially taxing, and with almost no places to shoot the game, you’ll be forced to push on unsatisfiedly multiple times during your horror quest.
Hollowbody is a return to the chilling era of PS2 horror, both for better and, unfortunately, for worse. Wander through inspired locations Silent Hill rewith little hope of survival, is still panic-inducing and attention-grabbing, but dealing with a poor map, lack of capture points, and frustrating combat is less enjoyable. Those looking for a creepy nostalgic experience will get a lot out of Hollowbody-mebut if you’re used to more modern games, the gameplay will probably bother you more than the monsters themselves. However, given that this is a single developer game, this is a real success.
