Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo highly praised the court that sentenced Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, to one year in prison and two years of probation, saying, “It preserved the independence of the judiciary.”
Mayor Hong pointed out on SNS on the 16th, “Representative Lee and the Democratic Party used the power of the majority to create chaos in the National Assembly and did their best to intimidate judges by mobilizing polarized supporters, but the results they received were the worst.”
Next, regarding the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Agreement Division 34 (Chief Judge Han Seong-jin), which sentenced Representative Lee, who was indicted the day before on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act, to one year in prison and two years of probation, “It was a purely judicial decision without any political consideration.” He gave a thumbs up and said, “What a great judge.”
He also praised him highly, saying, “(In February 2017, when the special prosecutor) requested an arrest warrant again for Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, the court gave in to the mass protests (issued a warrant), but this time, it preserved the independence of the judiciary.” He then bowed his head and said, “Thank you for your hard work.” I said hello.
At the same time, Mayor Hong said, “Politics is just a passing wind, but the independence of the judiciary is an eternal task,” and asked that we not be swayed by politics and move forward as is.
