US President Joe Biden withdraws from his bid for re-election as President of the United States. He now wants to focus on his responsibilities for the rest of his term. Biden today stated in a statement on X’s social network.
The 81-year-old Biden has faced pressure from within his own Democratic Party in recent weeks to withdraw from the race for the White House in connection with his poor performance in a June debate with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country that I step down and focus solely on the duties of the presidency for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote, adding that he would announce more details about his decision in the near future.
Biden also thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for her cooperation so far, but did not explicitly support her or anyone else as the next Democratic presidential candidate.
