How an Australian senator who booed King Charles defended herself

The Australian senator who booed King Charles during his speech at Parliament House in Canberra has defended her actions, saying she wanted to convey “global truths” and insisting he is “not our sovereign”, Sky News reports.

King Charles was booed by Indigenous senator Lidia Thorpe as he concluded his speech at Parliament House in Canberra. She told Charles, “This is not your land” and demanded a treaty after accusing the crown of stealing Aboriginal lands.

Hours later that same day, Thorpe said on Breakfast with Kay Burley that he still stood by his actions.

“We are the real sovereigns in this country”

“We are the real sovereigns in this country,” she said. “The king lives in your country, he is from your country. He cannot be our king.”

She said she was “not bothered” that some people believed she had abused her power because she had “the support of Aboriginal people in the country”.

Thorpe said his outburst was to convey “global truths about the royal family, who have caused so much devastation – not only to your people in this country, but to indigenous people around the world”.
