The flood on the Danube, which will reach its peak at the end of September, will be lower than initially estimated, namely 7900 – 8000 mc/s. The flow of the river will be more than double the multi-year average, which stands at 3800 m3/s.

“The flow on the Danube at the entrance to the country (Baziaş section) in the interval 22 – 23.09.2024 was increasing with the value of 6200 mc/s, a value that is above the multi-annual average of September (3800 mc/s). The flow of the Danube in Budapest today has a value of 6920 mc/s, and the maximum value recorded at this flood was 8200 mc/s, on September 21, 2024, 500 mc/s less than the initial forecasts of maximum values for the Budapest section, which indicated a value of 8700 mc/s, according to the data centralized by our colleagues from the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (under the authority of Romanian Waters)”, the Romanian Waters specialists reported on Monday.

According to them, the flood will be smaller in Romania as well, compared to what was initially estimated.

“Based on the latest data from the Danube basin, prognostic estimates and additional information received following consultations with experts from the National Centers for Hydrological Forecasts in Hungary and Serbia, the precipitation forecast for the next period, as well as the change in mitigation of this flood in the naturally floodable areas, upstream of Bogojevo, mitigation which will be much more important than the previous conditions (as a result of the significant reduction of the maximum flow and the volume of the flood wave), the forecast of the maximum values on the Danube at the entrance to the country is updated (section Baziaş) as follows: forecasted maximum flow 7900 – 8000 mc/s, in the interval of September 29-30, 2024”, the cited source also transmitted.

The institution states again that the Danube sector downstream Gruia is protected against floods by damming works.

“Based on the current information, the possibility of the emergence of special problems as a result of the spread of floods on the Romanian sector of the Danube is not forecast, but a careful monitoring of the evolution of the hydrometeorological situation in the Danube basin, upstream of the entrance to the country, is still necessary”, it is also stated in the press release.
