How can you tell if you have water in your gasoline or diesel? What do you have to do?

When you have water in your gasoline or diesel, your car’s engine may be affected and even major damage may occur. That is why it is important to identify the symptoms of such a problem as soon as possible. And, just as important, know what to do when you find that you have water in your gasoline or diesel.

There are quite rare cases in which drivers can face this problem, but it is possible to have water in gasoline or diesel.

This can happen either when the fuel is contaminated. Or, in Romanian, it is “bent” with water.

Either water can get into the tank through the fuel system if, for example, the fuel cap is left open.

How can you tell if you have water in your gasoline or diesel?

In some older cars, the fuel tank is made of metal. Over time, it corrodes, cracks appear and through these areas water can penetrate inside and contaminate gasoline or diesel.

There are indeed car models that have a metal tank that rusts and cracks over time. Generally, however, the problem is with the power plug. Either it doesn’t close properly, or it doesn’t close at all, and when it rains there water gets into the tank”, mechanic Robert Marin explained to ProMotor.

And when water gets into the fuel, accidentally or because it was “bent”, the engine will invariably be affected.

Here’s how you can tell if you have water in your gasoline or diesel:

  • the engine warning light comes on;
  • startup failures occur;
  • more smoke than normal will come out of the exhaust;
  • the car will accelerate slowly;
  • starting the engine will become more difficult;
  • the car will accelerate suddenly.

What do you do if you have water in diesel or gasoline?

When these symptoms appear, the safest thing to do is to stop the engine as quickly as possible.

Then, you either ask for the advice of a mechanic, or call a repair company to help you on the spot or to tow your car to the service.

In such a situation, the car should not start. So, you leave the engine off and call a mechanic or directly a platform to take the car for service. You will have no way of knowing how much water is in the tank. And if you try to turn it on, you risk screwing it up even more ENGINE“, said the mechanic.

To eliminate the problem, all fuel must be removed from the tank and engine. And this can generally only be done with special equipment.

Next, the mechanic will check the fuel system to see if there are any cracks. The engine will also be checked to repair any damage.

And only after the entire system has been inspected and cleaned will it be refueled with good quality fuel and the engine restarted.
