A recent study shows that Romanians are more concerned about tires for the cold season than other European citizens. Here are the main criteria that drivers in our country take into account when buying a set of winter tires.
In Romania, the use of winter tires is mandatory on all roads covered with snow, ice or ice.
These tires must be fitted to all wheels and there is no specific date when they should be used. Thus, regardless of the season, the weather conditions and the condition of the roads require their use.
Study: How do Romanians choose their winter tires?
A recent study conducted by Ipsos for Goodyear shows that only 31% of Romanians use winter tires to meet legal requirements.
The rest of the drivers equip your cars with special winter tires for safety. And 53% of them say they feel more confident driving in winter conditions when the car is equipped with special tires.
Of those who use winter tires, most say they choose them primarily for their excellent grip and braking on snow and ice.
According to the same report, 65% of European drivers who have winter tires from a premium brand are confident in winter driving. In contrast, only 54% of drivers using non-premium tires feel safe.
Therefore, the proportion of Romanian drivers who opt for winter tires due to increased grip, braking and maneuverability exceeds the European average.
What criteria must winter tires meet?
To comply with the regulations in force, tires must be marked with the M+S (Mud+Snow) symbol. Also, the tread must have a depth of at least 1.6 mm over at least two thirds of their width.
In Romania, winter tires marked with the M+S symbol are considered to meet the legal requirements. However, there are European countries where drivers must use tires marked with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol.
Compared to the M+S marking, the 3PMSF symbol proves that the tire meets more demanding criteria for driving in winter conditions. This provides superior braking and handling on ice, snow and mud.
The 3PMSF symbol proves that those tires meet all winter performance standards.
