how does the resurrection of *spoilers* work in the comics?

The mystery is solved. The series Agatha All Along has finally revealed the identity of the person who accompanies Agatha Harkness and her improvised sabbath on the Witches’ Road. Since his announcement to the cast, Joe Locke had said nothing about the role he had been given, even though many rumors were circulating about him. This was one of the greatest mysteries of this production, which did not hesitate to blur the lines to deceive the spectators. Episode 5 nevertheless revealed the name of the protagonist played by the actor revealed in Heartstopper. But what do the comics tell us?

Wiccan alias Billy Maximoff

As soon as Joe Locke’s participation was announced, rumors were rife. Agatha All Along is closely linked to WandaVision, it is difficult to imagine that the series created by Jac Schaeffer does not summon certain narrative elements. If it is to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that it was the responsibility to conclude Wanda Maximoff’s journey, and that a series on Vision is in development, Agatha All Along will not just tell how the Witch of Salem freed herself from the grip of her enemy. The destinies of the two characters are intertwined, and much more than the series could have led us to believe until now. Joe Locke is therefore Billy Maximoff, he succeeds Baylen Bielitz and Julian Hilliard. Wearing a crown similar to that of his mother, the teenager seemed ready to fight at the end of episode 5. The sixth is thus devoted to his origins, and particularly to the event which put him on the road of Agatha Harkness.

Indeed, while the Hex was being destroyed, the soul of Billy Maximoff clung to the nearest fleshly envelope. Killed in a car accident near Westview, William Kaplan was the perfect vessel for this character with extraordinary abilities. Since then, he has tirelessly sought to understand how he ended up here and, above all, to bring back his brother Tommy. If the series makes some changes, Jac Schaeffer’s approach is quite close to those of the comics.

On glossy paper — they appear from the year 1986 — Billy and Tommy are also creations of the Scarlet Witch. To depart of lost souls and desperate to never have children, Wanda fashioned two twins in the image of herself and her own brother. However, she later discovers that Mephisto is involved in their creation. The latter will come to claim them from him. In “M-Day”she manages to bring them back and disperses them into two different homes. Billy is placed with the Kaplans while his brother was entrusted to the Shepperds. Billy’s return here does not a priori involve Mephisto, unless the series cultivates mystery over certain elements of this resurrection.

The character in brief

  • Nom : William “Billy” Kaplan
  • First appearance in April 2005 in Young Avengers N°1
  • Powers: can cast spells, fly and generate light (read thoughts in the series)
  • Member of the Young Avengers alongside Patriot, Hulking, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, Vision II, America Chavez and Kid Loki.

Mephisto taken out of the equation?

Everything suggests that the character is quietly waiting to make his entrance. Its shadow hangs over all the elements of the story. This was already the case with WandaVision in 2021. Many spectators thought that the prison in which Wanda seemed locked away was the work of Mephisto. The “devil of the MCU” was ultimately not invited, the heroine being her own executioner and that of the residents of Westview. Agatha All Along went further, by directly mentioning the character highly anticipated by comic book readers. However, even though we could have imagined a collaboration of Billy and Mephistothe narration did not take such a path. Everything is not over, we could quite imagine that the souls used to give birth to the twins were once again claimed by the big bad guy. There are still three episodes left in the series to provide answers to the many remaining questions.
